Helm House History

...A WELCOMED PLACE...

The Helm House is a spacious one and a half story Victorian home designed and built in 1898 by W.A. Helm for his beloved wife, Mary Belle. That love can still be felt today manifesting itself in the grandeur of the home. The magnificent stained glass window in the Parlor was brought to Morgantown down the Green River from Evansville. The River Boat motif on the exterior gable trim matches the beaded Victorian trim in the Foyer. The 12' ceilings offered the ambience for entertaining that a man of Mr. Helm's business and social interests would have enjoyed.  Mr. Helm was the 2nd President of Morgantown Bank and Trust and was a practicing attorney. William A. and Mary Belle Helm reared a large family of eight children who occupied the home for 70 years, until 1968.

In his will Mr. Helm mentioned the "family shrine" four times and requested that "the home remain in the family... and to be a welcomed place for any of my children."

We truly hope that we can make the Helm House "a place of welcome"
